University of Reading Speaking On: Day 1 (20th March) Session: Working with communities: Community level innovation

Improving community flood resilience through visual communication: an information designer's perspective

Recent recommendations to support community resilience groups across the United Kingdom have included helping communities to produce and disseminate flood community plans. Most communications at community level will, at some point, include a document, leaflet or manual outlining steps for preparedness and specific aspects of the flood plan. These communications need to be effective. But how can we achieve this?

As part of my PhD research about visual communication to increase flood preparedness (University of Reading), I have been developing information materials to deliver local flood information, while working in partnership with volunteers from previously flooded locations.

In this presentation, I will talk about my experience of working with a flood action group, and the communication challenges to increase resilience at community level. I will present the ways in which visual communication can help volunteer groups to raise awareness of their flood community plan for the area, and prepare members of their community to be better prepared in case of a flood.

This case study provides potentially helpful insights to other flood resilience groups, and possibly for other contexts where preparations for extreme weather events are needed.
