Whitesands - is this how we will manage and communicate our designs in future?
So how can the flood risk management sector better design and communicate those designs to a variety of audiences?
One possibility is coming with the advances in processing and display technology. It has now reached a point where Virtual Reality (VR) has become a practical tool for communicating design to a variety of audiences in an interactive manner. Engineers and members of the public can now review and analyse fully constructed representations in ways not previously available to help see how the proposals fit in with the surrounding landscape and possibly avoid costly changes later on in design development.On the Whitesands Project, high quality VR allowed the engineers to visualise how the landscaping and flood defence design would be integrated to produce a more workable flood defence solution that better integrated with the public realm regeneration design. It also helped communicate the proposals to various stakeholders including local politicians and members of the public so they could more ably see how their town landscape will alter in the future if the proposals were implemented. Using BIM and VR, this is the start of a new way of designing and managing assets and productively communicating with stakeholders.
